What Is Worship?
Everyone worships something. Whatever we most desire, whatever we think most about, whatever we speak most highly of, whatever we do the most for, that is what we worship. There are any number of things people devote their lives to worshiping: money, careers, relationships, health, hobbies, politics, sports, vacations, and so on.
For Christians, we pursue our highest joy and deepest delight not in creation, but in our Creator. Nothing in this universe is more virtuous, more valuable, more praiseworthy, or more satisfying than God himself. In all that we are and do, we delight to worship Him for all that He is and all that He’s done for us in Jesus Christ.
How We Worship
Worship isn’t simply something Christians do on Sundays. Every day, and in every area of life, everything we do should be a worshipful expression of our joy in and thankfulness to God: “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1)
Yet while all of life is worship, it is especially when we join together as God’s people that we express most fully our heartfelt worship of God: “Praise the LORD! Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King!” (Psalm 149:1-2)
Every Sunday–the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead–we gather together to meet with God in corporate worship. There we hear God speak to us through His word, we speak to Him through prayer, we praise Him with singing, we honor Him with giving, we celebrate Him with the sacraments, and we rejoice in Him for all that He’s worth. Corporate worship is all about God being glorified in us through our being satisfied in Him.
